A classic Monte Cristo sandwich made with layers of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, coated in egg and fried to a golden brown, served with powdered sugar and jam.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
  • 2 slices of ham
  • 2 slices of turkey or chicken
  • 2 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Butter for frying
  • Powdered sugar (for serving)
  • Jelly or jam (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Assemble the sandwich by placing one slice of bread on a surface. Layer with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, then top with the second slice of bread.
  2. Whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper in a bowl until well combined.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little butter, letting it melt and coat the pan.
  4. Dip the sandwich in the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated generously.
  5. Cook the sandwich in the skillet until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Remove from the skillet, let cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with jelly or jam.

Notes

For a heartier sandwich, add fresh spinach, sliced tomatoes, or avocado. For a lactose-free version, use almond or oat milk.
