A comforting bowl of homemade baked beans that balances sweetness and smokiness, evoking nostalgia and warmth.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried navy beans
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 pound bacon, chopped (optional)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup

Instructions

  1. Soak the dried navy beans in water overnight.
  2. Boil the soaked beans in a large pot with 4 cups of fresh water for an hour.
  3. Prepare the sauce mixture by combining chopped onion, molasses, brown sugar, mustard, salt, black pepper, ketchup, and optional bacon in a large bowl.
  4. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  5. Mix the cooked beans with the sauce mixture in your bowl.
  6. Transfer the saucy beans into a baking dish and cover it with aluminum foil.
  7. Slow bake the covered dish for 3-4 hours, checking occasionally.
  8. Final caramelization: Remove the cover in the last hour to allow the beans to caramelize.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon. Feel free to add spices or different types of beans.
